Better N/A performance

Postby chris572 » Tue Apr 06, 2010 7:47 pm

Hi everyone, I just got a 89 targa. I bought this car from the orginal owner. The car is completely stock and in good condition. It drives well but when I'm on the freeway and want to pass another car, I put the pedal to the ground and my car bearly moves. I'm looking to up grade the engine to make it a bit faster. I'm not going to race the car I mostly want it to drive daily. I'm open to any opinions to any upgrades, like changeing the cams or adding a simple turbo. I'm not looking to make a ton of horse power maybe just around the 300-400 range. Thanks For the help. Also where's a good website to buy the parts
I'll be posting pics of my supra later this week.

Thanx for the advice, I'm new to the supra game so I didn't kno it was illegal to swap to a 1 or 2j. I seen a 7mgte on a website for 1500 so I think I'm going to try that. I was wondering if you kew any websites that had good engines to buy? I wanted to keep the car original, well I can scrap that plan.

Thanx again for ur help

1j is illegal, 2j is not unless it's a jdm 2j. 1500 for a 7mgte is way to much. I'd say go to 2j

NA's aren't really going to be fast..

I'm putting headers, MSD igntion, exhaust and intake on my 86.5, but I don't expect much..

only real thing to do is go turbo..

but honestly, I enjoy my NA's as NA, (even though I swapped the 89 from NA to turbo..;) )

What's a good exhaust to use one a 1989 n/a???
I have everything stock right now but plan on upgrading the intake to a hks super mega flow.

Thanks

Just something I learned .The na chasis comes with a serial number A70. The turbo comes with A71.I dont know what if this will be taken to reg smog, but that is still considered illegal since A70 is non turbo .I think you ill have to bar it,but not sure abou it,since you just whant some more power probably a stock 7mgte with approved intake like an hks, and a better flow exaust sistem like a tanabe or similar will do some 270 ish in the engine.Get some flexalite fans and even 10 1xtra horses will be free from the engine if just for dialy, keep in mind gasoline wil be arround 12 mpg. I had driven mine 140 milles on 10 gallons. To calculate hp on the wheels or whp multiply horsepower in the engine times 0.14 if manual tranny or times 0.175 for auto.then if using electrc fans add the 10 after the multiplication.
